Every night when she goes to sleep
She hears the train horn rolling by
It doesn't seem to follow a time
And it doesn't sound the same
It feels like a curse has consumed her head
The seat of her soul, her personal hydra
Been going on since last year
She can't quite figure out why
Her dreams are always vivid and lush
Like living many lifetimes now
She finds herself often wondering
About these intravenous lives
Last month when she moved it still
Haunted all her nights and thoughts
She don't dare speak of it to her
Family or friends
Oooooooooo
Reality, its bounds
Don’t seem to matter much these days
Oooooooooo
When dawn breaks through
Maybe she will feel fine
Her world consists of puddles and mirrors
She sees herself everywhere she goes
The cracked reflection, consciousness
Staring at her soul
Sense of self is a shifting plane
And sense of right is a sliding scale
The boundaries between us are
Always in our heads
She thinks aloud often about a
Life without any doubt, changing
The roundabout thoughts that spout
Around endlessly inside her brain
The fear set in when she realized
That she was not the only one hearing this
That the mortal dread was not unfounded
It’s in the heart of all she knows
Every night when she goes to sleep
She hears the train horn rolling by
It doesn't seem to follow a time
And it doesn't sound the same
Every night it gets louder and louder
Drowning out her sleep and thoughts
And one day she'll realize
She's more than a reflection

Slipping Backward

I called out of work today
Not sure why
Said I had a stomach bug
Just a little white lie
Still hearing occasional sounds in my head
Like tinnitus or that train
The struggle to get up each day
Exacerbated by the rain
Struggling to keep up seems
Like the name of the game
And no matter what, I fall
All the same
